Align our prayers with the Holy Spirit

The desires of our heart invites and involves the hand of God in our lives.

Seek your happiness in the Lord,
and he will give you your heart’s desire. – Psalm 37:4 GNT

When I have a closing prayer time with someone I do not know, but have had a wonderful time of ministry with, I usually will ask God to give them the desires of their heart. It is the best blessing I believe I can give them. I do that because I believe in an omnipotent God.

In God I am to trust, to wait, to rest, to delight, to commit, to know and to have patience. In delighting in Him, I receive my delights, His peace, His safety, His stability, His provisions, His guidance, His protection, His deliverance, a firm place to stand, a secure future, a refuge, I am free from worry, and I am free from fear of poverty. When my desire is to please God and my prayer reflect that, God can answer my prayer and while His answer may surprise me initially, upon reflection, I see His love, power and sovereignty – I see His omnipotence and His benevolence.

So my prayer looks something like this.

Take me with you, and we’ll run away;
    be my king and take me to your room.
We will be happy together,
    drink deep, and lose ourselves in love.
    No wonder all women love you! – Song of Solomon 1:4 GNT

I ask for divine grace – take me with You – I do not want to be away from Him, I desire to be close union with Him. I know that I cannot come to Jesus on my own unless the Father draws me in. I need to pray for the Holy Spirit to come and make the unwilling part of me, willing. If I am not brought into relationship with Jesus I will not have the power to overcome the world and my own fleshly desires. I am not driven to Christ, I want to be drawn to Him.

“Do not say, ‘I cannot pray, I am not in the spirit.’ Pray till you are in the Spirit…If you are averse to pray, pray the more.” – P.T. Forsyth
